Cate Black
Principal & Founder / RISE Architecture & Design
A Houston native, Cate has been practicing architecture on Galveston Island since early 2011. She has over 13 years of professional experience in residential, commercial, civic, and education architecture throughout Galveston and Houston. She has worked in both architecture and construction offices, where her responsibilities ranged from acting as Director of Architecture to Project Manager.
Cate Black is a registered architect with the state of Texas, a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Texas Society of Architects, and the SEED Network (Social Economic Environmental Design). She is a registered FORTIFIED Wise Professional, having received training for designing homes to a more hurricane resilient standard.
She received her Master in Architecture from the University of Houston.
She is currently on the Board of Directors for BUILD Galveston, served as a commissioner on the City of Galveston Planning Commission from 2016-2020 (vice chair in 2019, chair in 2020), sat on the Texas Society of Architects Convention Futures Committee, co-founded Galveston’s Own Farmers Market, and volunteers with a variety of local organizations.
She believes in making architecture accessible to the masses, and that good design holds immeasurable value.
